The Durban port is currently facing a significant backlog crisis that could potentially impact festive season orders, with approximately 71,000 containers stranded at sea. The situation has prompted warnings that it might take up to 15 weeks to clear the backlog, posing challenges for timely deliveries and supply chain disruptions.
Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has taken measures to address the issue, increasing ship working hours to handle 28% more volume compared to the previous week. Additionally, a container recovery plan includes extending helicopter service hours from 12 to 24 hours, aiming for quicker vessel turnaround time, reduced delays, and improved navigation.
Despite these efforts, the current plans and available equipment at the port suggest a potential 14-week timeframe to clear the backlog, spanning just over three months. Earle Peters, Transnet’s managing executive at the Durban Terminals, emphasized that steady progress is being made to minimize disruptions to festive season supply lines for imported products and improve access for export products.
However, challenges persist due to a nationwide backlog in port and railway infrastructure, amounting to R50 billion. Transnet’s commitment to addressing these issues includes future investments in maintenance and new equipment, such as shore cranes and straddle carriers expected to arrive in October 2024 and February 2025, respectively, for Pier 2.
Pier 2 has been particularly problematic for cargo owners, with the time required to clear cargo at anchorage currently at 13 days. South African Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) reports an average anchorage time of 247 hours or 10 days for container vessels at the pier.
The ongoing delays at South Africa’s ports have wider implications, affecting retailers like Pepkor, the owner of PEP and Ackermans, which recently confirmed a staggering R700 million worth of goods stuck at sea. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to streamline port operations and mitigate the impact on businesses and consumers alike.
